More information about Database Access 2.0 for ArcView GIS 3.2 This release introduces Database Access support for connections to ArcSDE 8 databases. With Database Access, you can only use the ArcSDE 8 functionality that is also available in SDE 3. Because ArcView GIS, Database Access, and ArcSDE are developed on different schedules, it is important to maintain a record of which ArcView GIS release Database Access works with, and which SDE servers are supported. The matrix below illustrates which versions of these products you can use together. ================================================================================== | |ArcSDE | | | | | Database| |Client | | | |ArcSDE8 | Access |ArcView|Library| SDE 3.0 |SDE 3.0.1 | SDE 3.0.2 |Servers | Version |Version|Version| Servers |Servers | Servers | | =======================================================================|========== | | | | | | | 2.0 | 3.2 |8.0 |Oracle |Oracle |Oracle |Oracle | | | | |SQL Server |DB2 Extender |*SQL | | | | |Sybase |DB2 Universal | Server | | | | | | Database (pre-rel) | | | | | | |SDE for Coverages | | | | | | |SQL Server | | | | | | |Informix Dynamic | | | | | | |Sybase | | =================================================================================| *Limited testing against these SDE servers 2.0 Database Access documentation The on-line documentation for Database Access 2.0 contains the most up to date information. Whether you are new to the Database Access extension or have used previous versions of the extension, please review the following on-line help topics which can be accessed from the ArcView GIS 3.2 online Help. Click on the Contents tab, double click the Extensions book, then double click Database Access to find the following topics: What's new in Database Access v2.0 What is a database table? The topic, changes to classes and requests, can be found by typing Database Access in the Arcview GIS 3.2 online Help index. These topics outline the new functionality and how the extension has changed. The Database Access manual is in a Portable Document Format(PDF) file. After the Database Access Extension has been installed, the documentation file, dbaccess.pdf, will be located in the av_gis30\avdocs installation directory. You can install Acrobat Reader 4.0 from the Acrobat4 folder found on the ArcView GIS 3.2 CD-ROM or from Adobe's home page at www.adobe.com. NOTE: There is an Database Access extension object model diagram in the on-line help which can be used to access help on the various Database Access classes. The help system may fatal if you use this object model diagram topic extensively to get class help. 3.0 Sample extensions and scripts for SDE and ODBC This extension includes several sample extensions and scripts for SDE and ODBC. For more information on these samples, double-click the Extensions book in the Help Contents page, then the Database Access book and refer to the Sample scripts and extensions book. Additional scripts, referenced by the Avenue request help, can be located by typing "database access" in the on-line help's Index. Select Avenue examples under the Database Access extension heading, then click Display. Scripts that have "SDEODBC" in the title will work with either ODBC, SDE or ArcSDE data. If the script or extension deals with spatial features, then it is SDE specific. 4.0 Setting Up Your Machine If you are new to using SDE/ODBC data in ArcView GIS, you can find out how to set up your computer by referring to the on-line help for the Database Access extension. Double-click the Extensions book in the contents page, then the Database Access book. The Spatial Database Engine (SDE) and Using Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) books contain topics for setting up your computer. 5.0 Known Issues for Database Access 2.0 The ArcView GIS 3.2 online Help includes Known Issues for Database Access. To review these issues, double-click the Extensions book in the contents page, then the Database Access book. The "Known issues" help topic is located under the Troubleshooting book. The following Known Issues are additional items not found in the online Help. Known Issues specific to the new database table functionality 1) It is not possible to create a chart from a database table. You must first export the table to disk and then create the chart from this table. 2) If you have a selection and then refresh the table, the selection is lost unless the table is associated with a database theme. 3) Database tables in projects created from previous versions of database access are blank when opened with this beta version. You must re-create these database tables. 4) When using Find on a database table, make sure to use the correct case. Find is case sensitive when used on database tables. 5) If you have a database theme that is defined with a one to many join, you cannot open a selectable database table from it. 6) The bottom row of a forward only scroll database table is cut off. Known Issues with ODBC 1) If you have alot of tables in your database, the table list in the SQL Query Wizard and in the Add Database Table dialog may be slow to generate. The performance is effected by the speed in which ODBC can generates this list. 2) If you enter an incorrect query or try perform any other operation that produces an error message, the message will be displayed twice. Known Issues with SDE and ArcSDE 1) If you have a database theme that has a join and in theme properties, you replace the join statement with another where clause, you will lose the connection and get an error when you attempt to draw the theme. If this happens, you can delete the old database theme, create a new connection and then re-create the database theme. 2) You will not be able to make a selection on a database theme with the Tracking Analyst and the Database Access extensions loaded at the same time. If you try to make a selection on a database theme with Tracking Analyst loaded, it will be automatically cleared. Unloading the Tracking Analyst extension resolves this issue.
